Utah County school district

How Do Utah County Schools Work?

Pick your school district before you pick your neighborhood. And read this before you trust a district rating.

Three districts cover Utah County.

Most of Utah County falls under one of three school districts. The boundaries matter more than people expect. Homes on the same street can fall in different districts, and that difference can be significant.

All green-tinted cities are Alpine School District today. On July 1, 2027, Alpine dissolves into three new districts: Aspen Peaks, Lake Mountain, and Timpanogos, shown by the tints and dashed lines. Each city moves whole into its new district. Boundaries shown follow city lines; a few edges differ, so always verify a specific address with the district lookup tools below.

Find your exact district before you make an offer.

School district boundaries in Utah County are actively changing. Alpine School District is splitting into three new districts effective 2027. The only way to know which district a specific address falls under right now is to use each district's official address lookup tool. Do not rely on a map or a Zillow listing. Put the actual address in the tool.

Important Update

Alpine School District dissolves on July 1, 2027, splitting into three new districts. Voters approved the split in the 2024 general election, and the names are now official: Aspen Peaks School District covering Lehi, American Fork, Highland, Cedar Hills, Alpine, and part of Draper; Lake Mountain School District covering Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs, Cedar Fort, and Fairfield; and Timpanogos School District covering Orem, Pleasant Grove, Lindon, and Vineyard. Each city moves whole into its new district. School assignments are being finalized by the new district administrations. If you are buying a home now with school-age children, ask specifically which new district your address will fall under. Kelsie can help you navigate this.

Alpine School District

American Fork, Cedar Hills, Eagle Mountain, Highland, Lehi, Lindon, most of Orem, Pleasant Grove, Saratoga Springs

Largest district in Utah. Large does not mean bad, but it does mean inconsistent. Do the individual school research, not just the district rating. Note: Alpine School District is splitting into three new districts effective 2027. See the update above for details.

Nebo School District

Spanish Fork, Payson, Salem, Springville, Mapleton, Santaquin

Covers the southern end of the county. Generally strong schools with a tighter community feel than the larger Alpine district.

Provo City School District

Provo and portions of southern Orem

City-specific district with strong magnet and arts programs. If you are buying near the Provo or Orem city boundary, verify which district your specific address falls under before you make an offer.

What nobody puts in the listing description.

Utah ranks near the bottom nationally in per-pupil spending.

Class sizes are large. If you are coming from a well-funded California district you will notice the difference. The individual school quality varies enormously within the same district depending on the principal, the parent community, and the neighborhood. A district rating tells you almost nothing useful.

Stop looking at district ratings. Start talking to parents.

The difference between two elementary schools in the same district can be significant. It comes down to the principal and the parent community more than the funding formula. Before you buy, find a parent in the specific neighborhood and ask them directly.

Charter school waitlists run one to three years.

Popular schools like American Prep Academy, Entheos Academy, and Rockwell Charter have waitlists that long. Enrollment opens in January. Get on the list the January before you need it, not the January after you arrive.

If your child has an IEP, act before their first day.

Contact the new district's Special Education department directly, not the front office, before your child's first day. Services can lapse in the transition gap if you wait. Alpine School District Special Education can be reached through alpineschools.org/departments/special-education

Schools are one of the first things we talk about.

Tell me the district you want and I will show you exactly which neighborhoods to focus on. It changes the whole search.
